Back to School Prayer During the Pandemic

Back to school prayers during this uncertain time are some of the most popular prayers given the circumstances. A quick Google search will return prayers for students, parents, teachers, and homeschoolers. We should pray for these people – and we should pray about these circumstances. What else needs to be included in our back to school prayer?

Prayers for Students, Parents and Teachers

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” … Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.” – Hebrews 11:6

When we pray for this year’s students – from preschool to college – we must remember that our worries insignificant compared to the greatness of God. Pray students, parents, and teachers to remember that we must seek Him while tensions are high. We must have faith that God is in control. He is in control and worrying about the current situation does nothing but put doubt in our hearts.

It may be hard to know if you’ve made the right decision in sending your child to school. Maybe your choice was based on factors out of your control. Or, perhaps your decision was made because of your own logic on the matter. No matter the reason for your decision, pray that your faith can carry you through your doubts. Pray that all students, parents, and teachers are turning to Him during this time.

Prayers for Homeschooling

Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it. – Proverbs 22:6

Many homeschoolers this year never planned on including homeschooling in their lives. I’m one of them. Although my oldest is just now preschool age, my husband and I had always intended to send him to school. Given the circumstances and his age, we thought it best to keep him home for preschool this year. I know many other parents that are in a similar situation with a variety of reasons for doing so.

Whether you or others intended on homeschooling prior to the pandemic, parents and children in this situation require our prayers. For some homes, schools provide more than just an education. Schools provide food and warmth that may not be available in their own homes. Pray for the parents struggling to provide for their kids and the kids that are going to bed hungry.

We must also pray for the children that are not exposed to any positivity in their lives without the presence of friends and teachers. Christian parents know that children must be brought up in the way of the Lord, but the possibility of exposure to Jesus is much less when kids aren’t getting out of their non-Christian homes. Back to school prayers must also include those that are in homes that do not know Jesus.

Back to School Prayers for the Future

There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off. – Proverbs 23:18

Schools provide an education that is intended to prepare students for the future. Does distance learning accomplish those same goals? Prayers for school this year are different because we worry more than ever about our kids’ future. Remember Proverbs 23:18 when feeling concerned about the future – it is in His hands. We must pray to remember this.

Pray for Hard Work

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom. – Ecclesiastes 9:10

Praying for kids to work hard despite the change in the school year is important. While the future is in God’s hands, we must still put forth the effort to do our best. This is true for all things – parenting, teaching, and learning as students. Pray that all involved in education this year strive to do their best. God can help us to achieve wonderful things.

Relationship Help via Back to School Prayers

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. – Colossians 3:12

During this difficult time, relationships can be easily strained. We must pray that relationships lean into God’s power and trust that He has it under control. When parents argue over their children’s’ education, when educators get frustrated with distance learning students, and when students get frustrated with their teachers, they require our prayers.

Remember that the person you are frustrated with is one of God’s loved people. Be compassionate, kind, humble, gentle, and patient. Without these things, we are sure to hurt others. Pray that all people can remember that all people are struggling with these changes.

Pray for Protection this School Year

But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. – 1 Thessalonians 5:8

Many people fear that someone that they love will become victim to the pandemic. Others experience less fear. No matter our personal feelings on the matter, we must pray that going back to school results in no further illness. Pray for protection for those at risk.

Ask that God place healing hands on those that are already sick. Have compassion for those dealing with the stresses of a vulnerable loved one. Trust that the Lord can prevent illness, but also that people strive to avoid its spread.

Pray for Peace in Going Back to School

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

Pray that we always remember to have peace. Share peace with others. Do not be afraid – God is in control of everything. Praying can grant us the ability to have peace of mind and lend it to our neighbors. Anxiety spreads like a wildfire – calm it with peace.

Prayers for a New Perspective

They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. – 1 John 4:5

We must pray that this school year grants us a new perspective. As we aim to be like Christ, we remember that he is not of this world. Those around us are from this world. We should not share their worries but pray for them (and us) to have a better perspective. A perspective that allows us to see what Jesus might see – that this is all part of His plan.
